Stop Giving Advice – How hypnosis can free you from having to tell people what to do
Have you been asked (kindly or otherwise) to stop giving advice?
Do you find it hard to resist offering your opinion even when it hasn't been asked for?
The hilarious but obnoxious Mr-You-Don't-Wanna-Do-It-Like-That was created by British comedian Harry Enfield for his long-running TV show, and struck such a chord with viewers that his name became a national catchphrase.
Everyone knows somebody like him. Somebody who knows better than everybody else and doesn't hesitate for a moment to tell them so. Ha ha, very funny. Except when you're on the receiving end.
Is giving advice a good thing or a bad thing?
It's rather unfair, when you think about it. After all, if you really do know the best way to do something, or know better than others what should be done in a particular situation (and Enfield's character was sometimes right), aren't you obliged to pass on what you know, so that others can benefit?
Shouldn't they be grateful, and glad that they have escaped the pitfalls they might otherwise have fallen into?
It's not that simple, of course. Offering advice feels good. It's nice to know that you know something. It's nice to feel that you're helping or contributing.
But being given advice, especially if you haven't asked for it, is right up there among the top ten things that people hate.
Sometimes this is so even when you have asked for it. It's a paradox.
However, it's a paradox you can't afford to ignore.
What happens if you can't stop giving advice
If you continually feel that you simply must tell people what to do, or give your opinion about their situation and their best course of action, it can have a corrosive effect on your relationships.
Whether it's just at home with the family, or in work situations with colleagues and peers, constantly dishing out unwanted suggestions and guidance to people will cause a build up of resentment. And resistance to anything you say.
So what can you do to refrain, to stop going automatically into advice-giving mode whenever you think you see a need?
