Now, whenever you see or think of belly buttons, it acts as a kind of trigger for your brain to automatically elicit the feeling of fear.

Whenever we experience an intense emotion such as fear, our attention is narrowed and we go into a kind of trance. This is what happened when your brain first made the pattern match – your conscious attention was limited, and your brain sought to make sense of the situation on an unconscious level by making that faulty link.
