Overcome Hypochondria (Fear of Illness) – Eliminate those harmful thought patterns and learn to view your health more objectively

Do you have a habit of assuming the worst when it comes to your health?

Do you want to develop a calmer, more balanced view of your body?

We all have a responsibility to look after our bodies, and it's good to get into the habit of examining your body occasionally for any abnormalities. Similarly, it's natural to worry about your health when symptoms do arise. Worry is a natural emotion that evolved to help us identify and deal with problems. But like all human emotions, there is a dark side to worry.

When worry spirals out of control

If you suffer from hypochondria, also known as somatic symptom disorder, you'll know firsthand just how this feels. Some days the fear of disease or illness can be so powerful that you just can't focus on anything else. You find yourself bouncing back and forth between endless catastrophic what-ifs. Then, just when you're sure you've found the worst-case scenario, Google turns up another horrific possibility.

Something as simple as a headache or a runny nose can feel like a death sentence, and simply getting through the day can feel like an insurmountable challenge. Even after getting the all-clear from the doctor, the fear persists. It might even intensify, as you start to worry that nobody believes you and your disease will never be properly diagnosed. With worry comes the fight-or-flight response, bringing a whole host of new symptoms to worry about – and so the cycle continues!

When you're stuck in the throes of hypochondria it can certainly feel as if there's no way out. But the human brain is a remarkable and highly malleable organ. We are all capable of changing our thought patterns and finding new and effective coping strategies.

What to do if you can't stop catastrophizing

Unfortunately, evidence relating to the treatment of hypochondria is quite scarce. However, some studies have emerged to support two treatment modalities: CBT and exposure therapy.

A 2004 study of 187 people with hypochondria found that hypochondriac thoughts were significantly reduced after six sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This study suggests that CBT can help people with hypochondria view their thought patterns more objectively and even change the way they experience and respond to bodily sensations.

Exposure therapy has also shown some promise for the treatment of hypochondria. This involves gradually confronting feared situations and bodily sensations, and learning to tolerate uncertainty. This can induce further anxiety at first, but with long-term habituation it appears that exposure therapy can be equally as effective as CBT.

How hypnosis can reprogram your thought patterns

While CBT and exposure therapy may be helpful, there is another treatment option that is both more comfortable and also potentially more effective. Since hypochondria results from a deep, subconscious fear of health problems, it makes sense to use an approach that targets the subconscious mind directly, reprogramming those neural pathways that guide you to believe the worst (even when cognitively you might know it is probably not the case).

Overcome Hypochondria is an audio hypnosis session that will guide you to develop a calmer, more balanced view of your body and your health.

As you relax and listen repeatedly to your session, you'll notice that you:

  • Feel calmer and clearer when considering your health
  • Can look at your hypochondrial thought patterns more objectively
  • No longer jump to catastrophic conclusions
  • Feel more relaxed and content in general.
