PTSD can occur after a significant traumatic event, or prolonged periods of extreme stress. Sometimes after a person has felt terrified, threatened, helpless or that they might die. It’s not weakness or something to hide or be ashamed of. It’s not something that everyone develops after extreme events and many factors can have an impact, including previous events in an individual’s life.
Soldiers arriving home from war torn areas, people from a wide range of occupations. First responders including police and ambulance workers commonly develop symptoms of PTSD. It can also affect people who have been through domestic violence either as a child or recently, severe bullying, natural disasters, accidents, victims of crime, attacks, abuse, the unexpected or sudden death of a loved one or other traumas.
Think you could you have PTSD?
It can show up in many ways and sometimes sufferers may not notice or recognise themselves that something is really wrong or see the symptoms. PTSD is as unique as you are. It's not surprising that it develops or shows up differently for each person. Sometimes symptoms will be obvious right away, or it can take much longer, event weeks or years to appear.
Common Symptoms are (although this varies from person to person):
Re-Living of traumatic event
- Flashbacks including memories or upsetting nightmares (of the event or other things)
- Feeling like the event is happening again (and again, and again)
- Strong physical symptoms like panic attacks, sweating, heart pounding, nausea, muscle tension
- Intense distress or upset when reminded of the event
Emotionally numb and avoidance
- Avoiding places, feelings, activities or thoughts that could remind you of the trauma
- Inability to remember important aspects of the trauma
- Loss of interest life in general and activities
- Emotional Isolation, avoiding spending time with others
- Feeling detached from others and emotionally numb
- Sense of future for yourself is limited (you can’t imagine having a full life or being free from this ‘condition’)
Emotionally aroused, anxious or jumpy
- Constantly on red alert or hyper vigilant (waiting for something to go wrong, or looking for danger)
- Find it hard to focus
- Sleep problems, trouble staying or falling asleep
- Outbursts of anger, irritability, or aggression
- Easily startled. Increased anxiety for no reason
Why use Hypnotherapy for PTSD?
- In “Psychotherapy” magazine (Volume 7, Number 1), various methods and techniques were studied and then listed in a review of pertinent literature by Alfred A. Barrios, PhD. In the above quoted text, the methods that showed to achieve the highest success in providing lasting results were the below (listed by rate of success):
- Hypnosis — 93% recovery after 6 sessions (approximately 6 weeks at one session/ week).
- Behaviour Therapy — 72% after 22 sessions (approximately 6 months at 1 session/ week).
- Psychotherapy — 38% recovery after 600 sessions (approx. 11 1/2 yrs at 1 session/ week).
- Studies have shown that individuals who have been through severe trauma are actually ‘more hypnotisable’ than the general public. A study of Vietnam veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder were twice as ‘hypnotisable’ as the general public. J Clin Psychiatry. 1990 Oct
- During and after WWI PTSD (or ‘shell shock’, as it was then called,) was intensively studied. The most effective solution was hypnotherapy. Many more soldiers actually became well with hypnotherapy treatment.
The ripple and ongoing effects of PTSD on not only individuals, but also loved ones, family and other people in their lives are huge. PTSD can have destructive and devastating effects and consequences if effective help is not obtained.
